What is in a name by William Shakespeare

SERUTVCOM - In Romeo and Juliet, William Shakespeare famously wrote, 'What is in a name? That which we call a rose, by any other name would smell as sweet.'

This line suggests that names, in reality, are just meaningless labels that do not define the essence of a person or thing.

However, the context of this line is that Romeo and Juliet come from rival families who hate each other, and their love is forbidden simply because of their names.

Juliet argues that if Romeo had a different name, he would still be the same person she loves, and so names shouldn't matter.

Therefore, while Shakespeare's line suggests that names are not significant, the larger theme is that society often places too much importance on them, leading to unwarranted prejudice and hatred."
